Husband identified as suspect in Skagit County fire that killed 3

Police have identified a 49-year-old man as the suspect in a Skagit County house fire that killed three people on Aug.9.

The victims are Erin Birman, 52; her 19-year-old son, Taylor Dawson; and Dawson’s girlfriend, Jillian Whitney Van Boven, 18, according to a news release from the Mount Vernon Police Department.

The Skagit County Coroner’s Office determined the three victims were shot and that contributed to their deaths.

A warrant for investigation of three counts of second-degree murder has been issued for Jason M. Birman, Erin Birman’s husband, who also lived at the house.

Investigators believe he was at the property leading up to the fire. Jason Birman and his blue 1994 Chevrolet pickup with Washington state license plate C67636L have been unaccounted for since the fire, police say.

The two-story house in the 15000 block of Highway 530 was reduced to charred rubble and investigators took six days to exacvate the scene and look for evidence. Mount Vernon police took over the investigation because it was discovered that the address belonged to a non-law enforcement contract Skagit County employee, police say.
